Getting around Victoria, BC
Monday, February 21, 2011Getting around Victoria is easy and doable via a wide range of conveyances, including by foot. This is a splendid city for walking: not only downtown and the Inner Harbour, but also a little farther afield to Beacon Hill Park, as well as some of Victoria’s lovely neighborhoods such as Rockland, James Bay, Faifield, and Oak Bay.
Bikes are another great way of getting around Victoria. They can be rented at CycleTrek on Wharf Street (Phone 250-386-2277). Taxi cabs can be scheduled by calling 382-4235 (Bluebird Taxi) or 383-7111 (Victoria Cabs). If you would like to rent a car, National Car Rental at 767 Douglas Street, and Budget Car Rental at 757 Douglas Street.
A good way to orient yourself to the city and environs is to take the Gray Line West’s hour and a half bus tour of Victoria. The Bus Tour company uses double decker buses from London, also has a three and a half hour tour to the Butchart gardens.
Tally-Ho Carriage Tours and Victoria Carriage Tours can take you for carriage rides that last from half an hour to three hours, and range from the Inner Harbour area to Beacon Hill Park and James Bay.
Victoria Harbour Ferries operates a fleet of 11 12-passenger ferries which travel around the harbour, picking up and depositing passengers at 12 stops around the Victoria Harbour and Gorge waterway. The main stop is on the dock directly in front of the Empress Hotel. Look for the Ferry Stop Sign on the dock. Just walk down the ramp, turn right and you will see the ferries coming and going. Harbour stops are located at: Mermaid Wharf, The Empress Hotel, Hyack Air, Delta Ocean Pointe Resort, Coast Harbourside Hotel, Fishermans Wharf, West Bay Marine Village and RV Park, Songhees near Spinnakers. On the Gorge Waterway the ferries stop at Swift Street right in front of Mermaid Wharf (near the Queen Mother Cafe and the Canoe Restaurant), at historic Point Ellice House, the Selkirk Development, and at Tillicum Bridge.
Around the Inner Harbour, one can use pedi-cabs to get around; they can also take you back to your starting point if your feet are too tired to make the walk.
